Internazionale is bringing to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni the best documentaries of the last season, selected specially for the festival which the magazine has been organizing in Ferrara for some years now, and which has built a reputation for itself as one of the most interesting and innovative events in Italy's cultural panorama. The event will offer audiences in the capital the chance to share in one of the most important sections of the festival, the documentary retrospective, designed as a contents page for a hypothetical issue of the magazine. Only this time the page won't consist of words and photographs but of moving images - yet with the same degree of attention to quality information and production, and an 'up close and personal' look at international current affairs.
Thanks to the cooperation between Internazionale and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the entire progam of documentaries will be attended by guests and members of the magazine's editorial staff, who will be introducing the general public to the films and the issues those films address - issues that the major media often ignore unless or until they are forced to deal with them, inevitably then doing so with an emergency feel to their reporting.
The films are not linked to one another either by geography because every effort has been made to include the most distant countries, from Nicaragua to North Korea and from Iceland to Sierra Leone, or by any dominant theme because the documentaries address different, albeit inevitably interdependent, issues such as the economic crisis, human rights, migration and conflict. What does emerge as a unifying element, on the other hand, is just how much we need to look at these images and at the reality surrounding us placing too much trust in appearances or in our own viewpoint. That is the first lesson learned by every reporter worth their salt, and it's what each and every one of us has to practice doing if we are to grasp the complexity of the world and to transcend the triviality of superficial prejudice.
