Issa Sesay, a former rebel commander in Sierra Leone, is waiting to stand trial at the international tribunal set up by the United Nations. He has been charged with crimes against humanity that range from recruiting children and mutilation to rape and genocide. His defense counsel, however, argues that he protected the civilian population and played a decisive role in the peace process. Listening to the testimony of his attorneys, of his victims and of Sesay himself, this film puts the international justice system "in the dock": can the trial of a single man really settle all scores with the traumatic past of an entire nation?
