The unemployment rate in Varshets, Bulgaria, is staggeringly high. For many women the only option is to go work in Italy as healthcare workers for the elderly. They leave with the intention of staying a year but often stay on for much longer. Men's lifestyles in Varshets are changing too as they learn to cope with housework and to devise self-help strategies, waiting for the money that comes in once a month from Italy, and for their wives' (increasingly rare) visits home.
