Forty years after his death, Jean Renoir's importance as a beacon in the history of the cinema shows no sign of abating. His films were the precursors of such movements as Italian Neorealism and the French Nouvelle Vague, making him one of the most valuable links in the chain joining classic cinema to modern film-making, thanks above all to a vision capable of magically combining a sense of measure and a love of experimenting, irony and disenchantment, a light touch and political commitment. But Renoir's true strength lies in the deeply human eye he casts on his subjects, in his ability to place people at the centre of everything, a skill that today's cinema appears increasingly to have mislaid. This is another reason why we felt we had no choice but to pay this tribute to his art, selecting his most celebrated and best-loved movies ranging from his early silent masterpieces and his work in the golden age of the 1930s to his years in exile in Hollywood and right up to the more mature works that he was to produce on returning to France. The programme has been supplemented by the work of several of his contemporaries in the field of poetic realism such as Carné and Duvivier, in an attempt to conjure up the cultural mood of an exceptional and truly unique era.
