Porte des Lilas, France/Italy, 1957, 95 min., Italian version
directed by René Clair, starring Pierre Brasseur, Georges Brassens and Henry Vidal
Returning to France from Hollywood, Clair rediscovers the mood of poetic realism in a strong melodrama peopled with unscrupulous gangsters, naive young women and disenchanted lovers. This, like so many of the director's films, is a tribute to Paris and its people, supported by a stupendous cast.
