La grande Illusion, France, 1937, 114 min., original version with Italian subtitles
directed by Jean Renoir, starring Jean Gabin, Pierre Fresnay and Erich von Stroheim
The apex of Renoir's art and one of his most spectacular successes, La Grande Illusion is still considered to be one of the best anti-war films ever made, combining antimilitarism with the sincere hope of a new, freer and more altruistic society. This was the first French film ever to be nominated for an Oscar.
