Antonio Canova, known as Toni, is an Italian immigrant working as a quarryman in Provence, but his life is turned upside down when he falls in love with a Spanish girl called Josefa. This film marked a watershed in Renoir's career thanks to its innovative directing style, which proved to be a forerunner of Italian Neorealism.
