A Paris clerk happens upon a prostitute and falls hopelessly in love with her. Acting on her lover's advice, the woman seeks to make the most of the situation, but with dramatic results. A masterpiece of noir (Fritz Lang made a remake), it combines suspense, social criticism and the bitter humour that was a Renoir hallmark.
