The Documentaries of Internazionale in Rome

The Palazzo delle Esposizioni is addressing major contemporary issues once again with a series of riveting and burning documentaries on current affairs, human rights and information selected from the most important festivals all over the world and presented by Internazionale in Rome after the journalism fest in Ferrara. In keeping with the magazine’s editorial approach, the retrospective uses exemplary stories with no holds barred, stories that are at once gripping and relevant to our own lives, to narrate the complexity of our modern world. This edition hosts films acclaimed at such major events as the Berlinale, Sundance and other leading documentary festivals including, among others, IDFA, CPH:DOX, Hot Docs and the Sheffield Doc/Fest, striking a balance between topicality and food for thought, between emotion and analysis, in an outlook on the world that only the best documentary cinema and great journalism are capable of providing. Our starting point, of course, could only be the war in Ukraine, with 20 Days in Mariupol, and the dramatic images of the beleaguered city that won Ukrainian reporter Mstyslav Chernov the Pulitzer Prize for 2023. Russia has a key ally on the global chessboard in China: the disturbing documentary Total Trust reveals how Beijing uses surveillance, technology and censorship to isolate and to brutally repress all forms of dissent. A year on from the protests in Iran over the murder of Mahsa Amini, Seven Winters in Tehran reconstructs the dramatic story of a young woman and her battle against a patriarchal society. The search for justice, and another scenario that has been in the headlines for years now, lie at the heart of The Lost Souls of Syria which narrates the first attempt to bring to trial those responsible for the violence and torture perpetrated by the Syrian regime. International law is the focus of Theatre of Violence, an ambitious film that tracks the historic trial of a Ugandan former child soldier, at once victim and murderer, at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. And last but not least, in the year leading up the presidential election of 2024, Praying for Armageddon provides a searing exposé of the impact of Evangelical preachers and lobbies on US democracy and foreign policy.
