The growing number of digital opportunities for controlling society in China have fostered an unprecedented level of government surveillance. Thanks to self-censorship and spying on neighbours, this surveillance no longer concerns only people whom the government perceives as a threat but, increasingly, also the ordinary man-in-the-street, whether he is shopping, taking the kids to school or taking out the rubbish. Big data and digital technologies are used as weapons to restrict freedom, and little by little the Chinese people’s social and political behaviour is changing.
