Can a person be a murderer and a victim at the same time? That is the question asked by Krispus Ayena, a defence lawyer with the International Criminal Court in The Hague. At the age of nine, his client Dominique Ongwen became one of the (at least) 20,000 children kidnapped by rebel leader Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda. Ongwen was brainwashed by Kony, who used a combination of Christianity, witchcraft and torture to turn the children into merciless LRA soldiers in his rebellion against President Museveni. Ongwen rapidly learnt that it was a matter of kill or be killed, and he rose through the ranks to become a commander before surrending and ending up in The Hague as a defendant in a trial fated to make history.
