The lost souls of Syria

directed by Garance Le Caisne, Stéphane Malterre, France, Germany, 2022, 99 min., original version with Italian subtitles

27,000 photographs of civilian detainees who had been tortured to death were stolen from the Syrian regime’s secret archives by a military deserter code-named Caesar and published in 2014. Director Stéphane Malterre and his co-author and historical consultant Garance Le Caisne probe the extent to which international justice has proven to be powerless in prosecuting the crimes of the Syrian Government. Though the case seems set to be consigned to oblivion, the victims’ families, in conjunction with activists and with Caesar himself, have nonetheless been seeking truth and justice in lawcourts throughout Europe. Over five years of struggle and investigation will lead to the first trial of the ranking officials responsible for Syria’s death machine.
