The 1960s was the golden age of the Italian cinema, the era that brought a fantastic run of absolute masterpieces to the silver screen, placing Italy's film directors high in the international firmament. Fellini, Visconti, Antonioni, Germi, Risi, Monicelli, Leone, Ferreri and many other great film-makers aroused awe and reverence in all of the subsequent generations of directors who sought their inspiration in the innovative approach developed by this handful of pure geniuses. The 'sixties in Italy was the decade of the economic miracle, the economic boom of which these films are a critical mirror, expressing the deep malaise and inconsistencies that afflicted the country. Alongside these masters, the decade also saw the start of what were destined to be truly outstanding careers in film-making, with such names as Pasolini, Bertolucci, Bellocchio, Wertmuller, Cavani and many others bearing controversial witness to the "anthropological" changes wrought by the consumer society. Over forty masterpieces, screened in their original 35 mm film format, take us back to a unique moment in our creative history, exploring the critical moments that turned us, for better or worse, into what we still are today.
