A magnificent recreation of Algeria's struggle for independence, this film depicts a people's war but it also dwells on the "enemy's" side of the story, on the French viewpoint.  The film won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival for its extraordinarily expressive power sustained with the stringency of a documentary.
