directed by Luciano Emmer. Italy, 1961, 92 min.
A master of the tempered approach to neorealism, Emmer in this, his boldest work, addresses such controversial issues as the inhuman working conditions of miners and prostitutes. Extremely bitter and crude, the film ran into huge problems with the censors of the period.
