The basilisks are southern Italian scions of well-off families who listlessly drag out their days, totally incapable of shaking the monotony out of their lives.  Stringent, cutting and mercilessly bent on portraying the truth, Wertmuller's first film explores the psychological and social reality of southern Italian society.
