encounters introduced and coordinated by Fabio Castriota

Offering us a unique opportunity to explore our inner selves by combining the cinema and psychoanalysis, Cinemind turns the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's screening theatre into a workshop open to debating and understanding human action. Viewing films addressing crucial moments in our experience followed by conversations between psychoanalysts, directors and the audience has been a healthy and unmissable appointment, a training ground for our awareness, for fully eight years: a barometer that periodically records our relationship with the world and that has more recently been issuing increasingly alarming warning signals of malaise. A moral vacuum and widespread indifference at every level of society have led us this year to explore the fleeting and fragile boundary between human and inhuman behaviour. Reassuring certainties, our beacons in life, are being turned inside out and upside down, making us increasingly incapable of understanding our own emotions and feelings and, consequently, of staying in tune with those of other people. The absence of empathy lies at the root of the apathetic inhumanity threatening us, and as Simone Weil well knew, it is the ill that turns men into things. Browsing through art-house movies, not only of the dramatic variety but also skilfully crafted comedies, we have put together a selection of stories of rejection: immigrants, down-and-outs, the homeless, juvenile delinquents and the unemployed are the "dross" that our society produces, the off-cuts in the void of a humanity that last lost all mercy and all sense of dignity. This loss of values is threatening our own identity and sanity, turning us into strangers to ourselves, to our bodies, to our own personal histories, in a word, to life.
