The caliphate, the pivotal political idea of Islam, has taken on a variety of different shapes in history, ranging from a symbol of the community of believers' unity after the death of the Prophet Muhammad to the Islamic State's contemporary take on the concept.  The caliphate's nature is at once both utopian and absolutely tangible in relation to the supranational organisation of the state.
