During the Second World War, 12-year-old Ivan cooperates with the Red Army as a courier and an explorer. Lieutenant Galtsey wants to keep him away from the front, but Ivan stays and faces dangerous missions. The first feature film by Tarkovsky, Ivan's Childhood is an early masterpiece, and was universally celebrated (it won the Leone d'Oro at the Venice Film Festival); but at home the Russians accused  the director of being a formalist because of the great visual poetry in the film.
