Italy 1954, directed by Roberto Rossellini, starring Totò, Nyta Dover, Vera Molnar, Franca Faldini, b/w, 93', 35mm Italian version
After serving 20 years in jail for a crime of passion, Salvatore, a simple barber, is thrown back into a world now unknown to him, full of selfishness and injustice. Embittered, he chooses to turn his back on society and returns to prison. Despite having been a very troubled production, Dov'è la libertà...? is a pivotal document of post-war society, carefully depicting both Italy's hypocrisy and orthodoxy. Salvatore is one of the strongest characters ever played by Totò.
