Internazionale in Rome
A selection of poignant, hard-hitting documentaries on topical issues and human rights

curated by CineAgenzia for Internazionale

It's time once again for the long-awaited rendez-vous with hard-hitting topical documentaries selected throughout the world for the Internazionale a Ferrara festival of journalism and then scheduled to be screened in Rome and numerous other cities throughout Italy.  When we at the CineAgenzia and Internazionale start hunting around for candidates for a new edition of this fest, now in its sixth year and with hundreds of screenings to its name, we have an absolutely clear picture of what we're looking for – documentaries on urgent issues and highly topical geopolitical situations yet bearing the least possible resemblance to straight reports and capable of elevating first-hand witnesses to the level of unforgettable leading players.  It is through these players' often moving stories that we invite the broader public once again this year to take a closer, deeper look at issues that the media often observe from afar.  Here, on the other hand, the situation is turned on its head and we see issues from the viewpoint of directors who observe the world through their subjects' eyes.  This year we're screening eight new films relating eight enlightening stories.  We shall be tracking the exemplary trajectory of Geng Yanbo, the ambitious and slippery mayor of Datong in China, and that of the courageous and visionary political leader Antanas Mockus in Colombia; we shall be witnessing a paradoxical operation against radical Islamism in the United States, and the merciless repression of freedom of information in Iran; we shall be exploring the tragedy of the economic crisis and of new migration in Spain, and the controversial response of self-defence groups against the violence of the drug cartel in Mexico; and we shall be observing Zimbabwe's complex but exhilarating march towards democracy.  That leaves one film, Voyage en barbarie, which tells the story of the umpteenth tragedy on one of the most secret migration routes, offering the clearest example of why every single one of these stories is a story that concerns us directly.
