Hank McCain is sprung from jail by a Mafia boss who then proposes that he rob a casino in Las Vegas. Montaldo holds his own against the atmosphere of the American noir movie, but the film's true strength lies in the outstanding cast in which John Cassavetes plays alongside Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands.
