(Tirez sur le pianiste, France 1960) directed by François Truffaut, starring Charles Aznavour and Marie Dubois, black and white, duration: 92 min., 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles

Film introduced by Matteo Berardini

Charlie, a pianist, finds himself involved in a settling of scores amongst gangsters and is forced to flee with his friend Lena, who knows a great deal about his past. Following the success of Les quatre cents coups, Truffaut changes register here and pays tribute to the American B movie, mixing different genres with amusing nonchalance. Though one of his lesser-known films, this is still a key work for anyone wishing to fully grasp the libertarian spirit of the early Nouvelle Vague.
