Using a few dollars collected during a radio programme, a 16mm camera and a handful of amateur actors, Cassavetes embarked on his career as a director with what was to become a milestone in the history of the American cinema akin to a jazz improvisation on the notes of Charles Mingus with its pulsating images of New York in black and white.
