by Andrzej Wajda, PL, 1976- 160'
The young filmmaker Agnieszka investigates the story of a bricklayer celebrated as a working-class hero in Stalinist Poland. As she reconstructs his rise and fall, she confronts the contradictions of a past that those in power first glorified and then sought to erase. One of Wajda’s most acclaimed works, the film combines investigative filmmaking with a reflection on the power of images, underpinned by a strong civic and political commitment. Winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival.
