(Ball of Fire, USA 1941) directed by Howard Hawks, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper, black and white, duration: 111’, 35mm, original version with Italian subtitles

Film introduced by Franco Montini

To escape the clutches of the police, a dancer in cahoots with organised crime accepts an unusual job as a consultant to a shy linguist studying underworld slang. This is one of classic Hollywood’s more original and sparkling comedies, written by Billy Wilder (with an eye trained on the story of Snow White) and directed by Howard Hawks on top form, ready as ever to play with gender roles and to poke gentle fun at the world of scholarship.
