An animated tour of the exhibition entitled In the American West allows children to experience a close encounter with the instantly recognisable style of one of the great masters of photography. The faces of hundreds of working-class Americans are the protagonists of life-size portraits. Richard Avedon shows how a simple snapshot can explore its subject in depth, delving behind appearances to reveal the daily lives of men, women and children. The experience offers children a valuable opportunity to learn to read images and to look for the details that can turn a photographic portrait into a work of art.
