Young Ida plays the role of mother and wife with dedication, but her husband Victor humiliates her with his despotic and arrogant behavior. It will take a plot hatched by the old nanny to change his attitude. A textbook kammerspiel, elegantly written and with a theme that was by no means obvious at the time. The film's success in France led Dreyer to direct in that country his masterpiece, The Passion of Joan of Arc.
