The planets outside the solar system have bombarded us with surprises, not the least of which is the existence of "super-Earths" very close to their own suns, and of gaseous giants with strongly eccentric orbits.  Thus we have had to devise new scenarios to explain the formation and evolution of planetary systems, including our own which, in the longer term, may well no longer be the calm, reassuring place that we see today.
