the new Italian cinema's antiheroes – 2nd edition

Running concurrently with the Quadriennale d'Arte in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni's exhibition halls, the Sala Cinema will once again be exploring contemporary Italy on the big screen after four whole years, hosting a rich retrospective of films by directors who have recently emerged or even risen to success in recent years. Italian cinema is calling its critics' bluff with a remarkable flowering of narrative and stylistic creativity. New ideas and a new take on life provide plenty of scope for the expressive talent of new actors, real faces capturing the instability of our day; they may be young and good-looking but they are dirty and embittered by life, to paraphrase the title of Scola's celebrated film. Mixing stories and genres from drama to comedy and melodrama to noir, this generation of directors addresses the insecure and threatening present, seeking a path to plumb its depths and then move on. For them, the screen is the cracked mirror of our world: its banlieues, its down-and-outs and its organised crime are a constant feature of the cinema of these years, symbolising the condition of widespread inhumanity weighing down in particular on the shoulders of the younger generation. Many of the fims are on a par with the best international films d'auteur, as we can see from the recent spate of awards they won in Berlin, Cannes and Venice, yet occasionally they fail to attract the movie-going public's attention: all the more reason to see them with us on the big screen and to reflect on our precarious existence.

Our gratitude for the films goes to: Academy Two, Adler Entertainment, Bibi Film, CSC production, Eagle Pictures, Fandango, Grøenlandia, I Wonder Pictures, Lucky Red, Medusa, Young Films, Rai Cinema – 01 Distribution, Tempesta, Videa, Vivo film, Warner Bros.

The retrospective is part of Romarama, a programme of cultural events devised by Rome the Capital City.
