Patricia Kingori, the youngest Black female professor in Oxford University’s 925-year history, explores the clandestine global industry of essays written to order, uncovering the world of Kenya’s young “shadow scholars”. The underground academic economy supports the success of the global North, once again depriving the people of Africa.

Eloïse King is a queer filmmaker of Caribbean origin, born in London, who adopts an interdisciplinary approach to tell complex stories that shine the spotlight on marginalised aspects of the dominant popular culture. Her work probes institutional and cultural phenomena to highlight the social inconsistencies and the resulting tensions of so-called “progress”. In her capacity as former global executive producer of VICE, she led a team that produced a number of award-winning international documentaries in North and South America, Europe and Asia. King has received the Logan Nonfiction Fellowship, Netflix’s inaugural Director Fellowship, the Firelight Media Fellowship and the TV and Film Charity John Brabourne Award. Her project entitled Youts, which marked her debut as screenwriter and director of a narrative feature film, was selected for the BFI London Film Festival’s prestigious Industry Programme. The Shadow Scholars is her first documentary as director.
