In an undefined future, the earth is covered with ice and human beings survive in subterranean cities, playing Quintet. The winner can decide what to do with the other players’ lives and save his or her own. Altman reflects on the human condition and on the game as a metaphor of the struggle for survival – like chess in Bergman’s Seventh Seal – foreshadowing the dystopic vision of Hunger Games.
