“How beautiful the world was before man arrived on the scene,” muses Paolo Cognetti, an author with a readership of one million and the winner of the Premio Strega award for his Le otto montagne. In the company of illustrator Nicola Magris, he sets off to discover the Big North in the footsteps of those masters of American literature who have celebrated its uncontaminated nature such as Raymond Carver, Jack London, Ernest Hemingway, H. D. Thoreau and Chris McCandless, the latter-day hermit who diseappared in Alaska in the 1990s and whose story was told in Sean Penn’s film Into the Wild. This existential pilgrimage injects the myth of the Frontier into a coaction to move ever forward towards an “elsewhere” from which it may be possible to start all over again and to restore man’s genuine dimension to enable him to coexist with the environment.
