From the magical city of Tepoztlán in Mexico, 15-year-old Karla takes us on a journey of self-discovery, addressing her gender transition against the backdrop of the joys and uncertainties of adolescence and of society’s gender-related prejudices. This gentle and encouraging story of coming of age and self-affirmation is as specific as it is universal.

Trans filmmaker and researcher Kani Lapuerta obtained a master’s degree in documentary film from the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Cinematográficos at the UNAM in Mexico. His work explores projects and spaces that defy the hegemony of gender, sexuality and physicality, opening up new opportunities thanks to the audio-visual medium. In 2023 he wrote and directed La UNAM sin Límites, a mini-series produced by the UNAM and Procine CDMX, that showcases stories of dissidence between sexuality and gender in Mexico’s largest university. 2021 saw the release of La Fuga, a short documentary exploring masculinity and the prison experience, which made its debut at the Morelia International Film Festival and has won awards at a number of international festivals. Kani also runs cinema workshops in institutions and cultural centres both in Mexico and abroad, sharing his passion for audio-visual language as a tool for creation and transformation.
