An inspiring tale of political commitment told through the lens of Sino-American filmmaker Nanfu Wang, who spent seven years tracking young Cuban activist Rosa María Payá, the daughter of five-times Nobel Peace Prize candidate Oswaldo Payá, in her struggle for democratic change in Cuba.

Nanfu Wang is an American filmmaker of Chinese origin, known for such documentaries as One Child Nation and Hooligan Sparrow, whose work focuses primarily on social history, human rights and activism in China. Born in a remote farming village in Jiangxi province, Wang came to the United States in 2011 and developed an interest in the cinema while studying at Ohio University’s School of Journalism, before taking New York University’s News and Documentary course. Her first film, on Chinese women’s rights activist Ye Haiyan, made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. Since then, while her international reputation has gone from strength to strength (One Child Nation on China’s one-child policy was a candidate for the 92nd Academy Awards), it is paralleled with growing intolerance in her own native country. Her work is consistently banned, she is the victim of defamatory online campaigns, and she is constantly at risk every time she films in China.
