Recounting the adventures of a group of surgeons in a field hospital during the Korean War, this masterpiece in the history of the cinema put Altman squarely in the global limelight with his irreverent eye and fluctuating director’s style. A mockery of jovial anti-militarism, the film revolutionised the way war was depicted, with a kaleidoscope of situations always verging on the ridiculous, winning the Palme d’Or in Cannes and an Oscar for the best adapted screenplay in the process.
