by Marco Bellocchio, Italy, 2021, 96’

Followed by an encounter with Manuela Fraire

A shadow looms like King Hamlet’s ghost over the Bellocchio family, strong, central figures of Italian culture who include not only the film director but also the critic, Piergiorgio, and the trade unionist, Alberto: The ghost in question belongs to the “angel” Camillo, the director’s beautiful and fragile twin who committed suicide at the age of 29. After more than fifty years, ageing survivors and his grief-stricken sisters take stock of the tragedy, seeking to rebuild the tesserae of a collective memory which the tragic event shattered and swept away, breathing life into a soul that was concealing the blow of feeling invisible behind a melancholy smile. Admitting to feelings of guilt and regrets of insensitivity towards the vexation of an oppressed soul, in the “madhouse that was our home” where everyone “lived a life of arid unhappiness”, the great director explores the dark and uncomfortable side of his past, offering us a family document of heart-wrenching beauty and of astonishing sincerity.
