A serial killer is terrorising the city so violently that the cops and criminals join forces to stop him. In his first talkie, Lang lays the groundwork for the modern thriller while also painting a portrait of a society running amok amid paranoia, cruelty and vigilante justice, shortly before the advent of Nazism.
