Back in the mid-sixties Pasolini travelled around Italy with his microphone and his cine camera to produce a portrait of the average Italian with his backwardness and his moral fears, in his sensational Comizi d’Amore. Driven by a similar need to bear witness, three authoritative voices from contemporary Italian cinema explore the vision of the future nurtured by the teenagers aged between fifteen and twenty whom they encountered in the course of a journey that took them the length and breadth of Italy. Treading in the footsteps of the great television reportages of Luigi Comencini, Roberto Rossellini and Sergio Zavoli, they offer us a portrait of the country as seen through the eyes of adolescents who apprise us of their dreams and their expectations, of their desires and their fears. “In making the film, we placed ourselves at the service of their stories, subordinating our role as directors to our role as witnesses and executors, with the aim of producing footage that we could then feed into a kind contemporary archive.” A concerning fresco which, through the direct testimony of Italian teenagers, leaves us with the perception that there is no future in Italy.
