A man and a woman clash in the room of a squalid motel on the edge of the desert, attempting to solve their obsessive mutual attraction. Altman brings to the screen a play by Sam Shepard, the playwright of the moment who also plays the leading male role in the movie, filming a morbid family melodrama that rests on his actors’ intense performances.
