The glory of the school of Parma, which stretched well beyond the century in which its two chief artists happened to be painting, shows how excellence in the Italian Renaissance was not restricted to the major cities lording it over provincial centres which looked of necessity to those cities for their inspiration. The first person to realise this was Giorgio Vasari who, in lavishing so much praise on Parma's two "stars", Correggio and Parmigianino, laid the groundwork for a fame that was to echo down the centuries.
