During World War II, an auxiliary nurse falls in love with a soldier who is sick of all the horror and refuses to return to the front.  Though arrested, he eventually finds a way of proving his true worth.  This war drama, so typical of the period, allows Litvak to strike a loftier note divorced from the propaganda of the time to produce a truly enticing melodrama.
