When a newspaper owner promises the post of editor-in-chief to whichever journalist manages to discover a murderer, he sparks a fierce competition with no holds barred.  In what is in effect one of his most pessimistic films, Lang points the finger of accusation at the social climbing that is such a feature of American society, offering us a fine example of what Truffaut rightly called his "inexorable" style.
