Francis Ford Coppola began his career under the banner of Gothic excess:  the specter of a drowned girl, a castle in Ireland, dolls, axe-murders...  Corman decided to have his young assistant direct what was intended to  be a very low-cost psychological thriller, yet in this movie we can already perceive Coppola's powerful visionary talent.
