The Shadow of the Angel
How can an artist born in Venice and raised alongside Giorgione and Titian have decided to turn his back on his city and choose the provinces instead? Why did he constantly travel back and forth from Treviso to Recanati, and from Bergamo to Rome? Why did he work in Cingoli and Jesi, in Asolo, Ponteranica and Trescore? Why did he accept commissions from confraternities and patrons who, while perfectly admirable and worthy, were nonetheless still of minor importance? Why were his customers only the members of the minor urban nobility, local dignitaries, and eventually mere merchants, jewellers and country vicars? In a story told through pictures, the curator endeavors to answer these and other questions on the life and work of  Lorenzo Lotto.
