Two gamblers meet in a poker den in California and forge a partnership at the gaming tables. Altman shuns all traditional narrative patterns with a film totally outside the range of movie genres, tracking both his leading characters’ and his numerous minor figures’ obsessions. Unpredictability, expectations and the frustration of those expectations, scattered like a pack of cards on the table, triumph in our contemporary world.
