In Spinaceto, a suburb of the capital, amid terraced houses with their lawns, their barbecues and their inflatable paddling pools, a group of middle class families spend the long hot summer, with parents inevitably frustrated and with children who, while morose, have all achieved excellent grades at school. An ordinary, unchanging setting that is the same in every suburb in the industrially advanced world, but a setting that has a tough time putting a cap on the threatening, toxic and self-destructive energy that is like a bomb ready to explode – and not even wholly metaphorically if even children know how to build it. Like a nightmare in a David Lynch movie or The Invasion of the Body Snatchers who deprive humans of their soul and mind, leaving their bodies like empty shells, the two brilliant directors take a merciless look at the direction in which our society destroyed by indifference and ignorance is moving, recording the final death throes of any form of collective coexistence.  This gloomy yet extraordinarily powerful tale in which latter-day ogres and children lose the way home for ever, won the Silver Bear award for its script at the Berlin film festival.
