Three women reject men in order to build a kind of self-sufficient family. Altman once again explores the female psyche, penetrating the theatre of the subconscious. His characters move as though in a dream, amid illusions, situations overturned, angst and personality changes. The film’s outstanding acting includes a superb performance from the director’s muse, Cannes Film Festival award-winner Shelley Duval.
