The Palazzo delle Esposizioni is addressing contemporary issues once again with a selection of the best documentaries from all over the world, presented by Internazionale in Rome after the journalism fest in Ferrara. True to its editorial line, the retrospective recounts the complexity of our era through exemplary stories with no filters in place that suck us in and bring us face to face with issues that concern us very closely.
In an age dominated by propaganda and disinformation, the programme's lodestar is journalism: in Sieged: The Press vs. Denialism Brasilian reporters take the measure of President Bolsonaro's lies in the midst of the catastrophe wrought by Covid; in Writing With Fire a group of Dalit women on the warpath challenge sectarian and macho India by creating a grassroots newspaper that is unique anywhere in the world; and in The Neutral Ground an investigative documentary uses the tool of irony to discover an innovative way of recounting racism in the United States and the birth of Black Lives Matter.
Then there are two issues on which the retrospective has never stopped working or taking sides: breaches of rights and women's struggles in Dying To Divorce on domestic violence and femicide in an increasingly conservative and fundamentalist Turkey; while in The Last Shelter we look at migration from Africa to Europe through a venue for solidarity where hopes and broken dreams cross paths on the edge of the Sahara.
