The fates of various characters on a pilgrimage to Loreto cross paths on a train. Beset by unbelievable difficulties, De Sica made this Catholic film at a time when the Germans were occupying Rome, saving himself and his film crew from the move to Venice where the puppet regime of Salò was creating its new "Cinecittà".
